The Historic Tennessee Theatre is located in the Burwell Building which was constructed in 1907. In 1928, an annex was added which was occupied by the Tennessee Theatre, an historic movie palace. The theatre includes the mighty Wurlitzer Organ which has always been a popular feature.
The theatre was closed in 2003 for $29.3 million renovations and reopened in January 2005.
The Tennessee Theatre is home for the Appalachian Ballet, the Knoxville Opera, and the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.
